It was second time lucky for the Saxon Express event in August after it being cancelled earlier in the year. Some well-timed rain meant that the event was able to go ahead with a few safety restrictions in place. Event day dawned and it was sunglasses at the ready for the three RNRMORT crews. The partnerships of Fred Bassett & Pat Beckett (truck 8), Rob Cozens & James Loxton (truck 9), and Alister White & Paul White (truck 10) all proudly flying the flag for the team.
BAMA hosted an event with a difference this time around, offering crews the opportunity to train together and hone their skills. The day began with a navigational warm-up challenge before a more frantic ‘punch hunt.’ Later in the day crews enjoyed a letter safari and put their map reading skills to the test in orienteering against the clock. The variation of activities was a fantastic test of the abilities of both drivers and navigators in incredibly dusty conditions.
A total of twenty-two 4x4s, five motorbikes, three MAN SUVs tackled the courses under the watchful eye of the marshals, including our very own Andrew Richman. He took his duties very seriously and might have even caught one of his own team speeding during the day!
The final results saw success for the White brothers in truck 10 who finished at the top novice team and a very respectable 2nd overall. Impressive results also for truck 8 – fifth overall – and truck 9 – 9th overall. This meant that the RN proved themselves once again to be the Senior Service, winning the inter service crown for this round.
Thanks to all involved, another day to remember!
